You know that great song " Love and Happiness" by Al Green? A song that talks about what we all want in life, but for most of my life, I haven't had a clue about how to achieve either. When I sang it I might as well have been singing "Fear of Happiness", because for me, fear has been a guiding force in not only love, but a lot of my relationships, my career, my attitudes about money, and my sense of self worth.
That is all going to change because of "May Cause Miracles" - A 40 Day Guidebook of Subtle Shifts for Radical Change and Unlimited Happiness written by Gabrielle Bernstein. In this guide, she takes you through assignments of meditation, writing, and practicing daily affirmations. You then take everything you learn along the way from these practices to guarantee you are going to have a happier, more positive, more energized view of life and the world around you. You are guided on how to control the fearful and negative thoughts that plague us all from time to time. The lessons are broken down first by day, then by week, and there is a specific focus for each day and each week. The first week is about realizing, or witnessing your fears. The second is about realizing self love, and getting rid of negative self talk, which for me has always been a way to sabotage myself and keep myself from being happy. One week deals with romantic relationships, another with feelings surrounding financial issues, and another is about forgiveness of others and forgiveness of yourself. As a person who works better when I have a list to go by to get things done, this book is the ultimate life list for getting things done to make not only ourselves happier, but everyone around us, too.
I found Gabby about nine months ago when I saw her interviewed by Marie Forleo. I had started following Marie about a year and half ago at a time when I was having some struggles in my romantic life and trying to change careers. I was reading a lot of self help blogs and publications. As far as my career, I knew I wanted to be a writer, I just wasn't sure in what capacity. I had dabbled in public relations and social media, and in my research on experts, came across Marie. On April 30, 2012, unbeknownst to me, she changed my life forever. She interviewed a woman named Gabrielle Bernstein, who had, at that time, written two books — Add More -Ing to Your Life: A Hip Guide to Happiness, and Spirit Junkie. The subject of the interview was "How to Use Manifesting to GetAnything You Want." Gabrielle tells the story in Spirit Junkie of how she went from being addicted to drugs and got on the path of spiritual guidance, eventually becoming a spiritual guide herself. When she resolved to become sober, she went looking for a sign, went into a bookstore and A Course in Miracles literally fell off the bookshelf, guiding her. I absolutely believe that to be true, because I believe Gabby fell into my laptop on that day, at a time when I was looking for and really needed some change.
I did start to see little shifts in my life, after putting into practice some of the meditations and changing my thoughts. I'm so grateful and life hasn't been the same. And I wanted more. May Cause Miracles is so much more. It's like I have Gabby's voice in my ear quietly coaching me to receive guidance from my inner guide, or my -ing, as she calls it. And to believe in miracles and witness them every day. I've come so far already, and I can't wait to see how much further I go on this expedition into love and happiness.
