When you walk into Floyd's Pub in Bucktown, it seems like it would be your average neighborhood type bar. But Floyd's is really a tribute to the relationship of a boy and his dog, which makes it so much more. Tony Glanz, the owner of Floyd's, named the pub after his dog, a beautiful, friendly black lab. There is a charcoal drawing of Floyd above the old fashioned cash register, and on the other side of the bar there is a statuette of a black dog holding a sign in his mouth that says "Welcome to Floyd's". To add to the charm, also above the cash register are pictures of Tony and his adorable family, who of which I am privileged to know
Once inside, venture further down the long space, and you notice character. Festive lights hang from the piping on the ceiling, and a black velvet Elvis painting hangs at the back of the bar, along with a Golden Tee machine and dartboard. There is also a pretty great jukebox! There are 3 nice size flat screen TVs, great for game watching. Behind the bar there are chalkboards with a current wine and beer list. Floyd's carries 28 plus types of beer. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but I was kind of blown away by the variety of beers for such a local pub! Tony can probably make almost any other drink you would like as well.
Everything on Floyd's menu is homemade, and far from your typical bar food. The nachos are probably some of the best I've ever had, so if you go there and try them, you have to get Tony to tell you the secret! (I think part of it is the freshly made torilla chips!). The menu has a personal touch, and it shows. I had the chopped salad, and everything in it was incredibly fresh, and the roasted chicken was perfectly cooked and had great flavor. And a burger there never disappoints. Very impressive for just a "neighborhood" bar.
So when you want to just hang out, watch a game, play darts with friends, and eat and drink well in a nice, unpretentious setting, Floyd's is it. Ask for Tony. Look for the pictures of the bar's namesake. And run, don't walk for those nachos!
Editors note: Floyd the dog passed away last year. He is truly missed. So next time you have a beer at Floyd's, raise a toast to its namesake.
